(from Scouts Activities online)

Need:

  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Cutting mat (or a solid surface that doesn’t matter if it’s damaged)
  • Pencil

Do:

Fold the paper in half, or in half again.

Sketch out a design on one side of the folded paper. Remember – your design will be mirrored when you open the paper up after cutting (or mirrored twice if you’ve folded twice).

For your first one, start off simple, then you can do more complicated designs when you know how it works.

Cut out your design very carefully using the craft knife, ensuring that you use the cutting mat (or similar) underneath your masterpiece, and that you keep your fingers well away from the blade.

You can cut a pattern along the edge of the paper (away from the folds) with the scissors.

Unfold your design to see what it looks like.

Now you’ve got an idea of what cuts result in what design, have another go, perhaps with a more complicated design. Examples of traditional paper cutting and more detailed instructions are on the PDF.
